What is an Operating Levy?

In Minnesota, voters have a strong voice in the direction of their school districts. School boards need voter approval to increase local property taxes when state funding is not meeting local programming needs.

A Referendum is the process by which the public votes Yes or No on a single political question. An operating levy referendum provides additional local property tax dollars to maintain or enhance school operations like programs and staff. Operating levies are different from bond referenda which support new construction, renovation and other capital expenses.

In November you will be voting to approve an operating levy, NOT a bond referendum.
