What Will The Money Be Used For?

This is where it's important to understand the two ballot questions.

Jordan School District has cut more than $1,000,000 from its budget since 2004. As a result programs and services have been eliminated, student activity fees have risen, teachers, staff and administrative positions have been cut; class sizes continue to grow. To see a list cuts click here.

If Q1 passes the additional revenue will only help to maintain the current level of educational services the district provides. It does not guarantee that any previously cut programs or staff positions will be reinstated.

So what about the second question? Schools require many people to run well. On average 85% of a school district's budget is spent on teacher and support staff salaries. As stated, increased class sizes have been one result of growing enrollment combined with year after year budget cuts. The school board believes that reducing class sizes should be a priority.

If Q2 passes the additional revenue will be dedicated to hire up to five teachers.

Remember:

  • Q2 cannot pass without Q1.
  • If Q1 fails the district must make additional cuts to programing and staff.
  • Money from this referendum cannot be used for new construction, major renovation and other capital expenses.
